William was released from the hospital last night - whew, what a week. William had his nissen fundoplication surgery last Tuesday and was doing fairly well post-op until Wednesday... he developed a virus called human metapneumo virus - a "cousin" to RSV and equally as dangerous for babies, elderly, and those who are immunocompromised. We think the girls had it the previous two weeks and, although we tried very hard to keep him away from them, he seems to have caught it.
He had a fever, was very lethargic, wouldn't eat, and got a terrible cough. He also had a horrible time with secretions and developed pneumonia. After some very scary days and nights, he started to make a come back on Sunday and Monday. By Monday afternoon, he was off all IV fluids and was breathing room air. There was nothing more they could do for the pneumonia at the hospital, so he was released.
Since he is having a hard time eating orally, he is on continuous g-button feeds (24 hours a day). He needs this to get the minimum amount of calories to thrive. The feeding team and doctors also hope that by being on continuous feeds overnight, he might learn to sleep through the night!! That would be amazing to say the least.
William is also trying to recover from surgery. He had some spells of retching, which is horrible to see and I hope he stops having that problem. It seems his throat is sore - that is the best guess at least - and the hope is that he will heal and feel more like eating as time goes on. (Once it is safe for him to eat orally)
Thank you so much for all the prayers and to our family for helping out so much with Norah and Isabella during the past week. We honestly don't know what we would have done without all of you. Thank you to our friends as well for the support and food :) you brought during the week!
